Analysis: The image montage above began circulating on Facebook and elsewhere in May 2011, approximately a week after England's Prince William married Kate Middleton in a lavish royal wedding ceremony broadcast around the globe.
Reader Margo Mead, who first called this hoax to my attention, commented as follows:
The "similarities" between images of Cinderella, Prince Charming, and the wicked stepsisters in Disney's animated movie Cinderella and photos of William and Kate's royal wedding are being touted as "art imitating life" or a funny coincidence.
However, investigation into the actual Cinderella movie reveals that 1) the cartoon Prince Charming wore a cream jacket and brownish-reddish pants; 2) Cinderella's hair was blond in the movie; and the wicked stepsisters wore dresses that were different colors than those shown in this picture (one had a bright pink dress with purple bodice, and the other wore a lime-green dress with a bright blue bodice).
The images have obviously been Photoshopped, in other words, but due to people's faulty memories some are accepting the altered cartoon images as the real thing and assume it's a crazy coincidence (or not) that the wedding images should be so similar. Others realize it's just a joke but share the pictures anyway. It's gone viral and I think there are probably as many people who think it's real as there are who know it's not.
Compare the doctored images to actual illustrations from the 1950 Disney classic.
