How I did it
After discovering America a dinner was held in Columbus' honor. As each acclaimed his discovery with a wine toast, it was next the turn of a person who had over-imbibed.
He said, "What's the big deal. You sail west and you make your discovery. Anyone can do it."
In a hushed room, Columbus called for an egg. He dared the guests to stand it on end. After everyone tried and failed, Columbus held the egg over the table and, pressing it down, he smashed its end so it could stand.
"Now," said Columbus, "anyone can do it."
When I did it
I did it several times at parties. Last year it was on the day of the spring equinox. My friend who believed the fairy tale said his failure was caused by being at the wrong time of day. I used Columbus' method after everyone else had failed. My friend is still a bit miffed at me.
