How I did it
Hold the egg in the tips of the fingers of both hands. Feel by intuition when the inside has steadied. Gradually experiment with removing the fingers. It may take a few tries, but it will stand without the benefit of salt or any other balancing agent. Make sure that the balancing surface is stable and perfectly level. Use a level, if you have to.
When I did it
Both equinoxes are equally (lol) good. I have balanced eggs both on the vernal and autumnal equinoxes for many years. While it is true that you can balance one on other days, it is much easier, in my experience, to do it on the equinoxes. The photo below was taken on the spring equinox in 2008.
Lessons Learned
- You are mistaken on some points. The reason eggs, and not foot-long hot dogs, etc., is because a raw egg contains a viscous, semi-liquid medium, with a more dense (yolk) inside it. This gives the egg an advantage over solid objects. It's somewhat like the earth itself, with its liquid core inside a shell.
